How reading has helped me!

There are many reasons why we as a society should open our minds to the world of reading. Since I'm assuming most people reading this blog are already readers, I won't go into the privy of the benefits. (I'll save that for another post) However I would like to share how it's helped me as a Latina American. My parents both natives from  Mexico are now American Citizens. My father came to the states with a workers permit and was able to obtain residency. (The laws were different back then)  He later married my mother and through some kind of amnesty obtained citizenship.(Again it was different back then, I hear its harder to obtain now days) I was raised in a home that was primarily Spanish speaking, and in a Hispanic community. It was five of us kids and we all did very well in transition to English. I have to admit, TV did help a lot.
Although my accent is mostly gone and Spanish  is now a second language, I still struggled. Its almost not fair and I'll tell you why. We are not accepted by the Mexican community. My Spanish now has a slight accent and I'm regularly at a loss for words. For a while I had the same problem with English. So basically I'm not Mexican enough for the Mexicans and not American enough for the Americans.
This my friends is where reading comes in handy. After reading books upon books of literature my English language has improved significantly. Luckily my love for books started in my teens and I was able to benefit while I was still young. So if your English is not as fluid as you like, READ!

  1. I envy your ability to speak in two languages! Try as I might, because I have no one to speak to, I struggle with Spanish.
I have a friend from Germany who spoke flawless english (albeit with an accent) and could make jokes and wisecracks in English. I'm sure some of it was from TV but he said it was from reading Books he had enjoyed in German translated to English. And when he learned enough from the translated books, he moved to new English books. Reading did it for him!

  2. Yes reading does help when there's a language barrier. German would be difficult though. Kudos to your friend and thanks for the comment!
